The Verdict is in on the Aluminum Body of the F-150
After being put to the test here, and throughout the country, the new military-grade aluminum body of the F-150 is stronger than steel.
The Ford F-150 always has been the go-to truck of commercial fleets throughout Pennsylvania, and certainly across the country, for decades. It’s definitely always been one of the stars of our lot here. When the features of the newly-redesigned 2015 F-150 were announced, we saw a few customers get nervous about the durability of the all-new aluminum body. Now, after months of having these trucks out on work sites all over the United States, The Verdict is in on the Aluminum Body of the F-150.
Steel truck bodies have been an industry standard for as long as there have been trucks. When Ford said they were dropping 700 pounds from the F-150 by switching to an aluminum truck body, skeptics took to the internet to voice their concern regarding what they were sure was a nail in Ford’s coffin. Today, there are virtually no skeptics left. As customers realize these powerful trucks are not made out of the same stuff as their beer cans, that this is military-grade aluminum that is stronger than steel, they are getting on board.
“We knew when we produced this vehicle, when we developed it, it was going to be revolutionary, and sometimes there are skeptics along with that, but that’s really bleeding away right now,” said Mark Fields, CEO of Ford Motor Company.
That skepticism is bleeding away now because the truck is out in the field across the country, being put to the test by the people who require that the F-150 be the toughest, most durable, long-lasting truck on the market. And it is. Some former skeptics even went so far as to take a sledgehammer to a brand new 2015 F-150 just to see how difficult it would be to complete basic bodywork with aluminum.
Needless to say, we are a commercial body company here at Allegheny and working with the new military-grade aluminum truck bodies of the F-150 is absolutely in our wheelhouse. Not only is the new aluminum just as easy to work with and repair as steel, it is also far more resilient to workplace dents and dings than the previous truck bodies. The 2015 F-150 is simply more durable and more efficient than any of its predecessors. And with the ongoing success of the newer, lighter body construction, we are fairly confident that the F-150 competitors will be following suit in the coming years.
